Wat Phra That Hariphunchai

Lamphun’s major tourist attraction is Wat Phra That Hariphunchai. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai was founded in 1150, quite possibly in the same location as a much earlier Buddhist temple established by legendary local ruler Queen Chammathewi.

The best known feature of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is its central chedi tower. The tower was built in the 15th Century and is covered in copper plates which have been painted gold. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai also has a second chedi, the Suwanna Chedi, which is one of only a few Dvaravati style chedi in Thailand.

The large assembly hall at Wat Phra That Hariphunchai was built much later in 1925 but is nonetheless highly impressive. The exterior of the hall is decorated with intricate gold stencil work on wooden panelling. The interior is also impressive with a series of large detailed wall murals and an unusual 15th Century statue of the Lord Buddha which is known as the Buddha with the Sharp Shins.

Wat Chammathewi

A second major point of interest in Lumphun is Wat Chammathewi. Wat Chammathewi is famous for its association with Queen Chammathewi, who ruled a small kingdom based in Lamphun during the late 7th Century.

According to legend, Queen Chammathewi’s ashes are entombed in the temple’s main chedi, the Suwan Chang Kot Chedi. The Suwan Chang Kot Chedi is 21 metres tall and rises in 5 levels. Each level has three niches containing a statue of Lord Buddha. This style of chedi tower is associated with the Dvaravati culture, which was an Indian influenced culture that was widespread across northern Thailand from the 7th to 12th Centuries.

Wat Chammathewi also has a second smaller Dvaravati style chedi which has partially collapsed leaving only the first level of this octagonal structure fully intact.
